Queer totem
year: 2022
location: Warsaw
scope of work: workshops, design, execution
For three weeks under our supervision people from LGBTQ+ community were sculpting a totem that on the day of Pride was placed in front of the Palace of Culture and Science. This project was funded by Converse, and Poptown.eu was the media patron.
Workshops conducted alongside the Przyszła Niedoszła collective sparked the group’s creativity through talking, sketching and a bit of sculptural practice. The result was the concept for the look, colours and technique of creating a totem.

We placed polystyrene blocks on a steel framework welded by Filip Musiał. Participants created an organic shape with knives and cutting machines, then the shape was covered in plaster and painted. We achieved a special holographic effect by mixing different paint colours with glitter.

We set up the totem on Parade Square, just outside the Palace of Culture and Science. On the day of the Pride March we also opened the Poptown zone. We designed its functional layout and created a colourful scenography, which became the backdrop for the events, meetings and concerts taking place there.
